be madは「怒り心頭」ようなイメージで、今回の「本気になって説教」とは若干ギャップがあるかも。
scoldが一番しっくりくるでしょう。
recognitionは「容認・承認」のイメージが先行するのでawarenessやbeliefなどとしたいところ。
around themはあえて訳す必要はないような気も。
もし「社会の」というニュアンスを付け足すならits childrenやthe childrenなどとしてやれば事足ります。

atmosphereは「（一時的な・特定の）雰囲気」という感じ。
environmentが一番しっくりきます。
今回はあえて不問としましたが、members of the society they lived inとわざわざ限定してしまう必要はあまりありません。
普通にmembers of societyで十分です。
